Home secretary rejects claims that plans for local inquiries are being watered down as Kemi Badenoch suggests some sort of cover up taking place
During her BBC Breakfast interview Kemi Badenoch claimed that the government has dropped the plans for five local inquiries into grooming gang, or child rape scandals, that were announced in January. As she was trying to fend of the questions about Adolescence, she said:
One of the things that Iam more bothered by is the fact that just yesterday, we had Labour telling us that theyare not going to be investigating the rape gang scandal, something which had happened all across the country. Thatas real. Thatas happening right now. Weare not talking about that.
I am absolutely astonished that Labour has dropped what it said it would do in January. And, as I said to Keir Starmer at prime ministeras questions, if he did not have a full national inquiry, people will start to think that there is a cover-up.
They are clearly uncomfortable with having inquiries that are looking into this issue.
As a rule I believe in mess ups rather than conspiracy.
But if true that Labour have shelved even the most limited public enquiries into grooming gangs, it does suggest that powerful Labour politicians have something to hide.
We are developing a new best practice framework to support local authorities that want to undertake victim-centred local inquiries or related work, drawing on the lessons from local independent inquiries such as those in Telford, Rotherham and Greater Manchester. We will publish the details next month.
Alongside that, we will set out the process through which local authorities can access the APS5m national fund to support locally-led work on grooming gangs. Following feedback from local authorities, the fund will adopt a flexible approach to support both full independent local inquiries and more bespoke work, including local victimsa panels or locally led audits of the handling of historical cases.
Thereas a huge information about this. This is completely wrong. Weare actually increasing, not reducing, the action being taken on this.
Child sexual exploitation, grooming gangs a these are some of the most vile crimes, things like rape or exploitation, coercion. Weare increasing the action against that.
I think that those are all important issues, and those were issues that Iave been talking about for a long time.
But in the same way that I donat need to watch Casualty to know whatas going on in the NHS, I donat need to watch a specific Netflix drama to understand whatas going on. Itas a fictional series. It is not a documentary.
Iam saying very clearly that my job is not to watch lots of TV. My job is to get out there and make sure that Iam talking about the issues that are happening in the country right now.
Badenoch in the right. Stop basing public policy on telly

The IEA forecast indicates a sharp rise in the requirements of AI, but said threat to the climate was aoverstateda
The global rush to AI technology will require almost as much energy by the end of this decade as Japan uses today, but only about half of the demand is likely to be met from renewable sources.
Processing data, mainly for AI, will consume more electricity in the US alone by 2030 than manufacturing steel, cement, chemicals and all other energy-intensive goods combined, according to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Kelly has been called a traitor for leaving her government job to write about immigration. But, she says, something has to be done about the chaos and injustice
One of the migrants who sticks most in Nicola Kellyas mind is Parwen, an Iraqi Kurdish mother she met in a camp near Dunkirk. Kelly played with Parwenas seven-year-old daughter and heard about how, before one attempt to cross the Channel, French police had fired teargas and nearly hit her four-year-old son. Kelly drove away from the camp, and made the crossing a easy for her, with her British passport a that so many people were risking their lives to make. aI was about to go home to my husband and son, warm and safe in a house, knowing that probably their tents were going to be ripped away from them that night, and theyad have to sleep out in the rain and the mud,a she says. aThereas a guilt attached to that. Itas like, I wish I could do more, help in some way, other than just writing, which never really feels like enough.a
Kellyas book, Anywhere But Here, brings such a human and humane perspective to an issue that is politicised and toxic. At the camp, Parwen wished her a safe journey home and, as she was driving away, Kelly spotted some graffiti on a wall which she took for her bookas title a something an asylum seeker might think as they decide to flee, or while forced to survive in a makeshift camp thousands of miles away, but just as easily something people might think about migrants arriving on these shores, or some politicians who wish the issue would go away.

Scientists say a complex mix of factors are making seasonal allergies worse for longer in many parts of the world a but why is it happening and is it here to stay?
The first time it happened, LA!szlA3 Makra thought he had flu. The symptoms appeared from nowhere at the end of summer in 1989: his eyes started streaming, his throat was tight and he could not stop sneezing. Makra was 37 and otherwise fit and healthy, a mid-career climate scientist in Szeged, Hungary. Winter eventually came and he thought little of it. Then, it happened the next year. And the next.
aI had never had these symptoms before. It was high summer: it was impossible to have the flu three consecutive years in a row,a he says.

For the first time, the man the KGB codenamed athe Inheritora tells his story
Rudi Herrmann took a deep breath and asked his son Peter to sit down. aI have a story to tell you,a he said. Rudi had been preparing for this conversation for several years, running over the words in his mind. He was about to tell his 16-year-old son that everything Peter thought he knew about their family was a lie.
The pair sat on a bench, and Peter waited quietly for whatever it was his father wanted to say. He was an academically gifted and unfailingly polite child, but he had been struggling psychologically. He had few friends and felt overwhelmed at home. Rudi, an ambitious German-Canadian film-maker, was charming with colleagues and friends, but with his son he was something of a tyrant: not violent, but psychologically domineering. He was disdainful of American pop culture, insisting that Peter not waste his time on mind-rotting pursuits such as reading comics or listening to rock music. It was almost as if he was actively trying to sabotage Peteras efforts to fit in.

Newly minted millionaires, corruption, nostalgia ... Fitzgeraldas novel has never felt more relevant. Jane Crowther explores its resonance in popular culture from Taylor Swift songs to her own gender-flipped retelling
Itas now considered a masterpiece, but when The Great Gatsby was published a century ago the response was mixed, with one critic writing: aI donat even know whether it is fully intelligible to anyone who has not had glimpses of the kind of life it depicts.a Back then, this life a which Fitzgerald had been living a was a gilded world reserved for the rich and well connected. His narrator, Nick Carraway, attends his nouveau riche neighbouras glittering gatherings in the summer of 1922, a time when many US families were living in poverty.
It was only when pocket-sized paperbacks of the book were given to US servicemen during the second world war (courtesy of the nonprofit Council On Books in Wartime) that The Great Gatsby became a hit. Perhaps the young men, far from their ordinary lives and pining for the girls theyad wooed in simpler times, connected with Gatsby (a figure left deliberately obscure by Fitzgerald so that any reader could imprint their own dreams on to him). As the war came to an end, maybe they saw themselves in Nick, the first world war returnee and observer who doesnat entirely fit into any of the social situations in which he finds himself.

They were artistic trailblazers, bringing modernism to the then deeply conservative country. But Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett faced huge hostility. Now a thrilling new show is celebrating their brilliance a and determination
Two oils on canvas hang together, strikingly similar, in the first room of the National Gallery of Irelandas new show. Both titled Composition, they date from 1924 and 1925. Theyare cubist still lifes, with the regular, geometric patterns and contrasting colour schemes favoured by many early 20th-century modernists, Marcel Duchamp and Juan Gris among them.
The paintings are clearly by the same hand. Except theyare not. The 1924 work, featuring what might be a fried egg, or might be an easel, is by Evie Hone; the piece from the following year, centred on a chessboard, is by her best friend, Mainie Jellett. These two women, virtually unknown outside their homeland, and not well-known even there, revolutionised art in Ireland by introducing modernism.

Tender sentiment touches instalments starring the likes of Chris OaDowd, Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti. But it hasn"t lost its demon side a youall cackle with laughter at some of the chaos
Itas tough being an anthology. While other dramas set up their premise and characters and then lazily dole out a little more of the same in every episode, anthologies must constantly seek our approval anew. If critics and viewers think the latest shiny thing is a dud, they toss it into the void and deem all the expert hard work that went into it to be a waste. Even the hits are only celebrated briefly before everyone moves on to the next fresh story, ready to give it a thumbs up or down.

As I discovered then, global problems need international responses. By working together, we can protect jobs and living standards
- This is the first in a two part series on the global response to Donald Trumpas tariffs
No more than a narrow window of opportunity remains if we are to prevent an unnecessary global recession. As China and the US decouple, disruptive trade wars are intensifying and threaten to descend into currency wars; import, export, investment and technology bans; and financial fire sales that will destroy millions of jobs worldwide. It seems barely credible that the world is being brought to its knees by one economy, outside of which live 96% of the population, who produce 84% of the worldas manufactured goods. But even though US officials have previously talked of a tariff policy of aescalate to de-escalatea, Donald Trumpas aim is to force manufacturing back to the US, and his 90-day relaxation of some tariffs does not mean he intends to defuse the crisis.
On Monday, Keir Starmer warned that the world will never be the same again, and reminded us that aattempting to manage crises without fundamental change just leads to managed declinea. He is right. As I learned in the financial crisis of 2008, global problems require globally coordinated solutions. We need a bold, international response that measures up to the scale of the emergency. In the same way that, to his great credit, the prime minister has been building a coalition in defence of Ukraine, we need an economic coalition of the willing: like-minded global leaders who believe that, in an interdependent world, we have to coordinate economic policies across continents if we are to safeguard jobs and living standards.

From fiscal rules to universities, doors have opened that were shut three months ago. Our future depends on which he chooses
It was Bismarck who expressed the art of political leadership most poetically. aA statesman cannot create anything himself,a Germanyas 19th-century iron chancellor once said. aHe must wait and listen until he hears the steps of God sounding through events; then leap up and grasp the hem of his garment.a
In other words, when it comes, seize the day. Leadership as Bismarck perfected it combined opportunity, readiness and drive. If circumstances allowed a something Bismarck was brilliant at ensuring a an opening might present itself, through which he could propel the state in the direction he wanted. At such moments, the gales of history seem to intensify, making it possible to achieve things that would otherwise be impossible, or more hazardous, in normal times.

Black Mirror is more than science fiction a its stories about modernity have become akin to science folklore, shaping our collective view of technology and the future.
Each new innovation gets an allegory: smartphones as tools for a new age caste system, robot dogs as overzealous human hunters, drones as a murderous swarm, artificial intelligence as new age necromancy, virtual reality and brain chips as seizure-inducing nightmares, to name a few. Striker on his unusual path to England, his first sight of snow and how friends back home now wear Notts shirts

The journey from Sukuta to the banks of the Trent has been convoluted, complicated by absconding triallists, contract withdrawals and the weather.

Currently he is second in the League Two scoring charts with 17 goals, spearheading the Magpiesa promotion push. The Londoner has alighted on a sophisticated, high-tempo hybrid of footwork and jungle a and seems to suggest a better way of living
Like turning up the radio to drown out the sound of a jackhammer, a lot of the dance music that is resonating right now is fast, loud and high-intensity, as if to distract from a| well, everything. UK ravers in particular are reaching for speed garage (Salute, Sammy Virji), cheerily high-tempo pop-trance (DJ Heartstring, Kettama) or doof-centric hard dance (Hannah Laing) to crowd out the horror.
The fastest and most relentless of them all is Sherelle, the 31-year-old Londoner who can reliably be found DJing at the most twilit hours of festival season and the clubbing underground. Sheas like the bus from Speed, always keeping above 140bpm (and generally about 160) with steely determination as she swerves between footwork, jungle and garage. After her legendary 2019 Boiler Room livestream, Sherelle goading the crowd with arms stretched wide as she delivered titanic bass-drops, sheas become a reliable defibrillator of vibes at any club night a but she also has a keen eye for the utopian potential of this joyous pandemonium. Her low-priced shows seek to quell the stress of the cost of living crisis a tickets for her current UK tour cost just APS10 a and she founded Beautiful, a project that nurtures Black and queer artists with studio time, label releases and more.

Faith-based entertainment is booming, thanks to a ready-made audience and the backing of the American right. The TV series The Chosen, with Jonathan Roumie playing Christ, claims to have reached more than a quarter of a billion viewers. And this is just the tip of the iceberg a|
If youare looking for your own personal Jesus this Easter, youave never had it so good. Faithabased entertainment is booming like never before, offering up myriad new screen Messiahs and resurrecting a few old ones. But if thereas a Christ for our times, it is surely Jonathan Roumie, the Irish-Arab-American star of the smash-hit biblical TV series The Chosen.
Nine years ago, Roumie was just another struggling actor in Los Angeles, desperately seeking his big break. He was also a practising Catholic. One morning, as Roumie tells it, he prayed for divine intervention: aI literally said: aGod, you take this from me. Itas in your hands now. Itas not up to me.aa Three months later, he was cast as Jesus in The Chosen, a series seeking to retell the story of Christ as a bingeable longaform drama, rather than the usual earnest mythamaking a with high production values, down-to-earth characters, historical context and aseven-season arc thatas not afraid to embellish scripture.

Royal Exchange theatre, Manchester
This version of Mike Leighas classic brings out the boozy claustrophobia, while Kym Marsh as Beverly and Tupele Dorgu as Susan brilliantly draw out the sadness of suburban dreams
For a play so rooted in the 1970s, Abigailas Party is having a surprising renaissance. The Royal Exchangeas new production is the third major revival of Mike Leighas play in less than 12 months, after outings with Theatre Royal Stratford East and English Touring Theatre. Natalie Abrahamias version relocates the play to Manchester, though this could be a middle-class cul-de-sac anywhere.
Leighas tale of suburban boredom and aspiration transports easily, speaking to a whole generation of striving consumers. At its heart is domineering hostess Beverly, played with a loose-limbed, tipsy energy by Kym Marsh. Forcing drinks and nibbles on her guests, sheas forever on the verge of swaying a either to the music or from one too many gin and tonics a but beneath this there are occasional glints of something harder.

The final book in Jim Heimannas survey of a century of US advertising takes us to a decade where Apple sold a new way of living and mermaids hawked Evian. Itas a aswan songa, he says a for his series but also the industry as a whole
As the longtime editor ofTaschenas All-American Ads book series, cultural historian Jim Heimann has helped chronicle the shifting landscape of commercial artistry through each decade of the 20th century. Now, with a final volume dedicated to the 2000s, Heimann has completed what he calls a aswan songa a not just for the series, but for an entire era of advertising. It presents the last moment before social media and the decline of print media transformed the industry for ever.
The 2000s were fraught with social, political and cultural disruptions. Chief among them were the September 11 terrorist attacks, which sparked a dramatic wave of national trauma that simultaneously drove the advertising industry to embrace patriotism while seeking escapism. Brands such as Budweiser, with its iconic Clydesdale tribute a which sees a team of horses pulling a beer wagon to New York before bowing their heads towards the Manhattan skyline a channelled unity, while luxury brands offered distraction through aspirational messaging.

Uberto Pasolinias raw and urgent drama, from a draft by Edward Bond, sees a traumatised Odysseus face the shameful aftermath of war
The film world is on tenterhooks for Christopher Nolanas forthcoming Imax-epic treatment of Homeras Odyssey, but Uberto Pasolinias fierce, raw drama of the poemas final sections, describing Odysseusas traumatised return to Ithaca after the sack of Troy, may well give Nolan something to live up to. Pasolini collaborated on the script with screenwriter John Collee, evidently developed from a draft playwright Edward Bond wrote in the 90s; among other things, this film deserves attention as the final work from Bond (who died in 2024).
The Return is an elementally violent movie about PTSD, survivor guilt, abandonment, Freudian dysfunction and ruined masculinity. Juliette Binoche is the deserted queen Penelope, enigmatically reserving her opinions and dignity, refusing to believe the absent king is dead and declining to remarry as the island descends into lawlessness without a clear successor. Ralph Fiennes is Odysseus, enigmatically washed ashore semi-conscious in a way we associate in fact with late Shakespeare rather than Homer; he is reluctant to reveal himself, maybe through shame at having not returned before, at returning now in chaotic poverty and isolation and overwhelmed with his secret knowledge that the glories of war are a shameful delusion.

Mackerel patties to snack on and deep-fried eggs in a rich curry sauce a both are great for new year on 14 April
Sinhalese and Tamil traditions may differ, but the celebration of the new year in mid-April unites the two communities. Itas a major cultural moment that marks the end of the harvest season, and some key customs include everyone cleaning their home to prepare for the festivities (and to clear away bad luck!), the lighting of oil lamps and, of course, food. That can take the form of special sweets, celebratory treats such as kavum (cakes made with coconut oil), kiri-bath (milk rice), kokis (a crisp fried dough), and everyday favourites such as todayas two dishes.
