Ceiling fans should help cool down energy bill

Article continues below and (thank you)

Problem: In today's energy-tight market, it'll cost an arm and a leg to run your air conditioner all summer.

Safe solution: Try using ceiling fans instead, which use far less electricity. Air conditioning can account for as much as half of your summer energy bill.

Look for a ceiling fan with the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star label, awarded to fans that move at least 20 percent more air per watt of energy consumed. These are about 50 percent more efficient than conventional fan units, which can save you $15 to $20 per year on utility bills plus big-time savings from not running your air conditioner.

If you prefer to run the AC anyway, find useful tips on buying and saving energy on air conditioning at the EPA's Web site by clicking "find products" at www.energystar.gov or 888-782-7937.
