AIDS Patients Need To Be Well Fed To Respond To Anti-retroviral Therapy

Article continues below and (thank you)

Since 2004, there has been an increased availability of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) for HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. But surprisingly, there has been a high mortality rate following the beginning of ART in low-income countries.

“Because of the profound wasting associated with AIDS, proper nutrition is an important part of therapy, yet chronic malnutrition coexists with HIV disease in Africa,” said Douglas Heimburger, M.D., UAB professor of nutrition sciences.

“We know little about how dietary intake and poor nutrition interact with ART, creating an urgent need to investigate this link.”

Heimburger has a Fulbright Scholar award to investigate the effects of poor nutrition on ART, working at UAB's Center for Infectious Disease Research in Lusaka, Zambia.
