Where's my rebate check?

 
 

Q: My wife purchased a phone for $10, then applied for a $10 rebate, but the check never arrived. When we called, the manufacturer said we'd have to wait two months for another check. Again, no rebate. The manufacturer asked us to send in details of our purchase again. There's been no further response despite three additional inquiries from us. Now what?

A: Rebate checks are often delayed; eight weeks isn't uncommon. Most retailers use third-party firms to handle processing, and that can add to the delay, said Lori Takahashi of the state Attorney General's Office.

It's estimated that just 40 percent of buyers collect rebates they qualify for, she said, quoting from a study by the Aberdeen Group, a Boston-based market-research firm. Companies count on a big chunk of buyers not getting their rebates — that's money the companies pocket as profit.

Rebates can be rejected if you don't include original documents or receipts, or if you miss the deadline. Read the fine print and make sure you follow the manufacturer's directions. Keep copies of your documents. Contact the manufacturer if you haven't heard back after a couple months.
