Should I forgive one-night stand?

 
 

When everything is so new and quite agonising it is easy to feel that you just want to end the relationship, because to continue it would be too painful.

But, if possible, give each other time to decide what you want to do.

For the relationship to survive, your partner needs to be deeply sorry for what he has done and to understand quite how much he has hurt you. He also has to give you lots of reassurance that he loves you and he must understand that it will take time and a lot of hard work for you to believe him and to be able to trust him again.

He needs to be prepared to answer your questions and go over again and again how and why it happened.

The tendency is that the person who has had the one-night stand wants to forget it and move on with the relationship whereas you need to talk about what happened and all the anger and hurt you feel.

It takes hours, days, weeks, and months to get a relationship back together after a one-night stand or an affair. You need to be prepared to look at why it happened, which can be painful.

Did he have too much to drink and she was extremely available? Was the relationship under stress because of the demands of moving house or a new baby? Even in very good relationships the arrival of a new baby can cause havoc and it's a big period of adjustment.

I am not making excuses for him but understanding why it happened is an important part of the recovery process or can indicate what issues might need tackling.
