Acne drug tied to blood fat abnormalities

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Lipid disturbances arising from the acne treatment isotretinoin, more familiarly known as Accutane, may be more common than initially thought.

Findings from a new study show that 44 percent of patients who begin oral isotretinoin treatment for acne will develop abnormal triglyceride levels. By contrast, the information leaflet included with Accutane, the Roche brand of isotretinoin, notes that approximately 25 percent of patients can expect to develop a high triglyceride level.

The results, which appear in the Archives of Dermatology for August, indicate that abnormal total cholesterol and liver enzyme levels are also fairly common.

The good news is that the moderate-to severe abnormalities were usually transient and reversible.

Dr. Lee T. Zane, from the University of California at San Francisco, and colleagues assessed the rate of abnormal lab test results among 13,772 isotretinoin users, between 13 and 50 years of age.

In addition to abnormal triglyceride levels, abnormal total cholesterol and liver enzyme levels developed in 31 percent and 11 percent of patients, respectively.

"The incidence of abnormally high serum lipid levels during isotretinoin treatment may be greater than previously estimated," the authors conclude. However, the clinical significance of these abnormalities remains to be determined.
