August 29, 2005 08:40:57 PM PST
If you're a woman in your mid-40's, you may be experiencing some physical and emotional changes, such as irregular periods and volatile mood swings. This is typical of perimenopause.
According to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, about 80 percent of women experience perimenopause. It usually occurs around age 45 and can last anywhere from a few days to many months.
Symptoms include:
Irregular periods.
Hot flashes.
Night sweats.
Problems sleeping.
Changes in weight, skin, and hair.
Depression, poor concentration, and mood swings.
If you're feeling overcome by your symptoms, speak to your doctor. Sometimes, medication can help you cope.
