Readers respond: Have you ever considered gastric-bypass surgery?

I always had some extra weight but never became obese until about 20 years ago after the death of my husband. I ended up with some health problems and the weight just started piling on. By the year 2000 I was told I that I probably wouldn't live much longer. I had pulmonary hypertension, 4 leaky heart valves and asthma. I was off and on oxygen and was either in a wheelchair or walked with a cane and I was only 46 years old! I also suffered from fibromyalgia and arthritis. Because of the lung problems I couldn't even help myself by exercising. On April 9, 2001, I had a RNY Gastric Bypass. My starting weight was 247 with a BMI of 50. I now weigh 118 with a BMI of 24. I can walk, run, dance and play with my grandchildren. Last year I had my first ever "normal" pulmonary function test and my echo cardiogram showed my pulmonary hypertension within "high normal" limits. Did I risk my life to have this surgery? No way, I was risking my life by not having it.

— Cheryl Lamka, Bellevue

I had surgery in Spain on July 24, 2001, at 415 pounds. Nineteen months later, I'm at 213, eating like a normal or average person and still losing slowly. I run a support group in Bellingham, where we have no surgeons, no medical support other than educating our primary care doctors and many of us have to travel to other countries because our insurance won't cover this. If I have a heart attack or become diabetic, they'd spend thousands on it but not on getting me heathy. I also have gone from five prescriptions a month to NONE! I'd love to see something about the insurance issues so many of us have. I am a single mom and now have a $17,000 debt to cover while the insurance no longer has to pay out much for me in the ways of medical care.

I had WLS with an adjustable gastric band 4 years ago and have been a normal weight for over 3 years. You really did your readers a disservice by not pointing out a cheaper and safer option.

— Jessie Ahroni, Lake Forest Park

I have seriously considered this surgery. My mother had it done a few years ago and I know it saved her life. My older sister also had it done and has been successful with the surgery. My problem is no insurance company will cover the surgery and I would need $30,000-$60,000 in spare change to pay for it myself. That's not going to happen. If there was one thing I wish could be reported on, it's the lack of insurance coverage for the surgery. The insurers consider it like plastic surgery, as if it was just for "looks." I believe it could be documented that in many cases, the surgery would SAVE insurance companies money in the long run. Who knows, maybe I will someday be able to get this done, but for now I have to wait and suffer with my weight, which is caused in great part by genetic factors and disability due to a severe auto accident 3 years ago.

I had gastric bypass surgery on June 4, 2001. I weighed 434 pounds the morning of surgery, I now weigh 306 pounds nine months later. I had diabetes, high blood pressure, history of blood clots, sleep apnea and loads of pain from the weight crushing my bones. I had no complications from surgery. I prepared for the surgery mentally and physically by vitamins and lovenox shots every 12 hours a week before. Mentally I knew if I didn't have surgery, I would die soon. I had become almost bedridden; my husband did everything, the shopping the cleaning. I can say now I have gotten my drivers license, I can shop without an electric cart, I can move without pain, I can now fully participate in my son's life instead of watching. I do the shopping, the cooking and the cleaning. I take less then 50 units of insulin a day compared to 2001. I go in to my PCP every three months for blood work checking out all my levels; so far I only take a children's vitamin and calcium. My blood sugars are in the normal range. I would do this surgery over again in a minute, it has already changed my life. I start college this fall to become a RN. And I feel so much better! Eventually I will need all the extra skin taken off but it is worth it.

— Trina Jones, Sumner

I have attended classes to discuss the weight loss surgery at Evergreen Hospital in Totem Lake. Having excellent health insurance through Regence, I called them but they refuse to cover the cost. Gastric Banding is a new process that is a band inserted through small slits with a scope and 5 small incisions and can be removed any time (and no plumbing re-routing of my intestines). The Evergreen hospital wants $22,000 for the surgery and even if my insurance covers the process they still want $7,500 up front. Since my insurance refused me I now look forward to a future of diabetes and other morbid obesity problems.

— Mark Boyer, Bothell

I had weight loss surgery on September 5, 2002, with Dr. Au from Group Health Eastside. Preop, I weighed 243. I now weight 157.5, a loss of 85.5 pounds in just under six months. I had no complications from surgery, unlike those you've written about in the past couple of days. This is one of the best decisions I've ever made.
