Not only do most U.S. adults sleep less than they should, they sleep less than they think they do, but those richer sleep more, according to a study

Study author Diane Lauderdale found that the study participants spent an average of 7.5 hours a night in bed, but they spent only 6.1 hours asleep. White women slept the most, 6.7 hours a night, followed by white men at 6.1 hours, black women at 5.9 hours and black men at 5.1 hours. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, also found higher income was associated with more sleep.

"People who make more money may have fewer worries, or they may have more control over their sleep environment," suggests Lauderdale.

Studies suggest that average sleep times have declined since 1900, when people reported sleeping nine hours a night, while studies from the 1970s reported average sleep times closer to seven hours a night, according to Lauderdale.

"As we learn more and more about the importance of sleep for health, we find evidence that people seem to be sleeping less and less," Lauderdale said.

The more restrictions placed on a beginner teen driver, the less risk of a fatal car crash, say researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Lead author Susan P. Baker based the analyses on commonly found restrictions in existing graduated driver licensing programs that included: a minimum age of 15 1/2 for obtaining a learner's permit, a waiting period after obtaining a learner's permit of at least three months before applying for an intermediate license, a minimum of 30 hours of supervised driving, a minimum age of at least 16 years for obtaining an intermediate state license, a minimum age of at least 17 years for full licensing, a nighttime driving restriction and a restriction on carrying passengers.

Comparing states with five program components to states without graduated driver licensing programs, the researchers reported an 18 percent reduction in fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers. Programs with six or seven components were associated with a 21 percent reductions. Graduated driver licensing programs differ in each state.

Annually, about 1,000 16-year-old U.S. drivers are involved in fatal crashes, according to study co-author Dr. Guohua Li.

The findings are published in the journal Pediatrics.

Hemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency) may be curable with a new gene therapy that is successful in mice.

Writing in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the authors explained that Factors VIII and IX are blood clotting proteins. One in 5,000 males lacks Factor VIII and develops hemophilia A, and one in 25,000 lacks Factor IX and develops hemophilia B or Christmas disease. Both sets of patients will bleed uncontrollably when injured.

Patients are treated with intravenous synthetic Factor VIII or IX two to three times a week; but around a third of hemophilia A patients develop antibodies to synthetic FVIII that inactivate its clotting properties. Treatment with FVIII products that don't elicit this response can cost up to $1 million per year.

The researchers, led by Qizhen Shi and Robert R. Montgomery of the Medical College of Wisconsin and the BloodCenter of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, took bone marrow stem cells from mice with hemophilia, inserted synthetic FVIII into them, then helped the cells develop into platelets.

The new platelets were accepted easily into the bloodstream, where the FVIII remained hidden until the platelet stuck to a damaged blood vessel and released its healing proteins. Mice given 5,000 to 10,000 times the amount of antibody necessary to neutralize FVIII in humans still clotted normally if they had received the engineered platelets. Human trials of the technique will begin if tests in larger animals are successful.
