Schools Have New Weapon For Head Lice Screening
Detection is the key to any head lice control program, but finding tiny, nearly transparent nits -- the eggs that adult lice lay, can be a big challenge. Nit Lite(TM) is a new hand-held lice detection tool that has been specifically developed to help elementary school teachers, nurses and screening volunteers find nits and break the life cycle of head lice among children and others infested with the parasite.

"Head lice screeners are usually non-expert volunteers -- yet they are called upon to detect lice eggs (nits) that are smaller than a sesame seed and often transparent," said Dr. James Breneman, general medical practitioner and co-inventor of Nit Lite. "It's a needle in a haystack, but this 'needle' has the potential to become a school-wide re-infestation if it goes undetected," Breneman said.

Nit Lite(TM) is an innovative head lice detection tool that uses low- energy UV-A ultraviolet light combined with a magnifying lens to illuminate hard-to-see head lice nits on hair shafts. When nits are exposed to Nit Lite, they glow -- making it easy for lice screeners to find and remove the nits. Once detected, the nits can be removed, adult lice can be killed and the infestation can be halted. Simply killing the adult lice does not prevent the next generation from infesting people.

"Early, accurate detection with Nit Lite can help reduce exposure to pesticides and play a key role in getting children back into the classroom faster," said Ralph Robertson, president of Rite Lite Incorporated and co- inventor of Nit Lite.
