E. coli more common in cattle fed ethanol byproduct

Last Updated: 2007-12-05 16:51:15 -0400 (Reuters Health)

CHICAGO - U.S. cattle fed distiller's grains were twice as likely to harbor E. coli bacteria as cattle that were not fed the byproduct of ethanol production, according to a study by Kansas State University.

The particular type of bacteria, E. coli 0157, poses a health risk to humans who can become sick by eating undercooked meat, raw dairy products or produce contaminated by cattle manure.

Researchers are trying to determine why E. coli is more prevalent in cattle fed distiller's grains and find a way to prevent it from happening.

"It could be something that changes in the animals' hindgut as a result of feeding distiller's grain, or maybe the byproduct provides a nutrient for the bacteria," said T.G. Nagaraja, a professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology at Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas.

"Distiller's grain is a good animal feed," he added. "That's why ethanol plants are often built next to feedlots."

U.S. ethanol production capacity has risen 30 percent this year to 7.2 billion gallons and is expected to grow to nearly 13 billion gallons next year.

The demand for ethanol helped push corn prices to 10-year highs earlier this year and prompted many livestock producers to seek cheaper feed alternatives, such as distiller's grain.

Corn is about two-thirds starch, which is converted to the alternative fuel ethanol and carbon dioxide during a distilling and fermentation process. The remaining nutrients such as protein, fiber and fat become distiller's grain.
