Asha writes: My boy’s room is lemon green, and am getting him a red car bed, but want colour of carpet should I put in? Please help!
DesignTalk says: With two kids of our own, we have definitely learned some lessons about carpet! That is, if at all possible, try to put in hard flooring (wood or laminate) in kids rooms — which will stand up to the wear and tear that kids dish out. (Picture art projects, grape juice, and sick days.) Plus, adding hardwood floors is an excellent investment for your home.
Once you’ve selected your new flooring, add colorful rugs that can be washed or replaced when stained.
With a car bed, we suggest a rug that will complement the car theme.
Here are some ideas:
We like this Driving Time Activity Rug, and this Race Car Rug will look adorable with his car bed — and coordinate well with this Race Car Track Rug.

If you family has some racing fans, you might like this NASCAR rug and all the coordinating NASCAR accessories available in the Team Shop.

Decorate Baby’s Room Like Madonna - For Less
Tuesday, October 31st, 2006
Fans and pundits alike are amazed at the $28,000 Madonna recently spent on nursery decor and toys for her newly-adopted son. Fashion trendwatchers admire her jungle-themed decorating style, while news commentary scoffs at her lavish spending in light of the poverty of her 13-month old son’s hometown village in Malawi.
Our take? We could have saved Madonna a bundle, with a little smart shopping. Let’s take a look at her shopping list to see how the rest of us can create a baby’s room for less than the cost of a new car.
1. Madonna chose giant murals of tigers and lions to decorate baby David’s room.
Our pick: This adorable wall mural with baby giraffe, lion, elephants, and more. Printed on heavyweight billboard stock, this pre-pasted wall mural is beautiful to look at and it hangs like a dream. Price: $129.
2. Madonna splurged on a child-sized electric car for her newest child.
Our pick: Kids today need electricity, and toddlers especially need to exercise their large motor skills. This vintage-look police car (or fire truck) is the cutest thing to get little feet moving. Price: $129 for the police car, $149 for the fire truck.
3. Madonna spent $9,500 on a rocking horse for baby’s posh retreat.
Our pick: As any parent who has ever purchased an extravagant toy for a child (only to have it played with 4 times) knows, money can be spent in smarter ways for kids. This classic Derby rocking horse goes with any decor, even in your living room. Price: $79.
4. Madonna selected a surround-sound system to soothe baby to sleep.
Our pick: Even though my voice isn’t as famous as Madonna’s, I still sang lullabies to rock my babies to sleep. (I think that’s why they pretended to sleep so fast: they really wanted me to stop singing.) For those nights when you’re too tired to sing (and yes, you will have many nights like that as a parent), a small radio is an essential investment. Rather than a surround-sound system (which I cannot imagine telling my husband the baby gets befoe he does), this amazing Kito Design Mood Radio is a lovely choice. Part lullaby and part night light, it mixes soothing sounds with dreamy light shows to put baby (and parent, sometimes) to sleep. Price: $34.99.
At these prices, you don’t have to be a Material Girl to afford a stylish baby’s room. You might even have some money left over to help needy babies around the world.
Help for Kids Sharing a Room
Wednesday, September 6th, 2006
Question: I have two girls — an 8- and 6-year old — in the same room with a lot of stuff and not a lot of room. Other than lots of shelves everywhere, what other suggestions do you have? Are there catalogs out there with decorating ideas for tweens?
One likes camouflage and the other likes pink. We have detachable bunkbeds and two matching chests of drawers. We have settled on lime green and pink for the colors of the room but need storage ideas on a budget.
We have the walls for storage ideas and that is it. The closet is packed with two girls’ worth of clothing and shoes. We also just moved the little tikes tiny blue and white table with pink plastic chairs to their sister’s room, so they no longer have any kind of table/desk.
